The Season Debut concert marks the return of renowned cellist Jesus Morales with two works, Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations and a world premier by composer Sonia Morales-Matos to be performed by her brother Jesus and conducted by her brother Jaime! The concert also features the dazzling, colorful Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular work, and the brilliant and exciting Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture.
Two identical Holiday Concerts, filled with holiday spirit and the season's favorite music. This year with a new twist! Dwight Lenox, a central Ohio singing favorite joins both the Symphony and the Young Strings. Dwight has a wonderful voice reminiscent of Nat King Cole and this will be his first performance with a symphony orchestra. Make this concert part of your Holiday celebration!
The April Concert features double concertos and the return of pianist Michael Chertock from Cincinnati. His last appearance demonstrated his wonderful artistry and he returns with two concertos: the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto, considered by many to be the hardest piano concerto written, and the endearing Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. The concert will also feature Gershwin's American in Paris. The last time we paired two Gershwin works on a program, it was sold out! Mark your calendars now for this concert!
The May Concert "Becoming American" caps a week of community engagement far beyond the concert hall. Headling the program is the Ohio premier of Ellis Island, The Dream of America. Seven actors portray the experiences of immigrants as recorded in the Ellis Island Oral History Project. Period photographs capture individual faces alternately worn, fearful or exuberant, upon arriving at the gateway to the "Land of Opportunity". It is one of the most popular symphonic works with more than 140 performances by 60 orchestras. We also explore the many cultures of America through music by African American, Native American, Asian and Hispanic composers.
