The Central Ohio Symphony wanted to celebrate some of the diverse groups that make up this great nation. The concert is built around Ellis Island: The Dream of America by composer Peter Boyer. It has been performed more than 150 times by symphonies in the US in the last 11 years, to great acclaim. The performance includes slide projections of those who came to Ellis Island and readings from the Ellis Island Oral History Project. This Central Ohio Symphony performance will be the Ohio premiere of Ellis Island. Accompanied by the Symphony, actors will portray the stories of seven individuals who came through Ellis Island in the early 20th century.

In addition to Ellis Island, the orchestra will perform Dances of Panama by William Grant Still, one of the most performed African-American composers, Aires de Mi Tierra by Puerto Rican composer Mariano Morales, who is also the brother of Symphony conductor Jaime Morales-Matos, and The Plaza of the Ancient Village by Trevor Reed, a member of the Hopi tribe and Executive Director of the Hopi Music Repatriation Project. This will be only the second performance of Reed's work.

The Symphony selected composers from many diverse populations to represent the broad tapestry of American music and culture. Too often, symphonies are comfortable playing and listening to music from only the mainstream classical collection, which is dominated by European influences. This concert is a chance to celebrate the contributions of other groups to the symphonic repertoire.

Fewer than 200 tickets remain for this concert. The Symphony has sold out both it's October debut and April concerts this season, a first for the organization. "We would be thrilled to sell out our final concert of the year" said Executive Director Warren Hyer. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Symphony Source, 24 E. Winter Street in downtown Delaware, or online at the Symphony’s website. Tickets are also available at Buehler’s Food Market on West Central Avenue and Beehive Books in Delaware.

Please note: Artists and programs are subject to change. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds based on these changes.
